The HURC 60 Amp OPTO Electronic Speed Control is a good choice for many medium to large brushless motors, and is designed to be used with 2 to 7 cell Lipo batteries. A male T-plug connector is installed for the battery connection, and 3.5mm female bullet connectors are installed for the motor connection. Male bullet connectors are included for a motor.
This ESC has NO Battery Elimination Circuit (BEC), so you will need a receiver battery pack or a Universal Battery Elimination Circuit (UBEC) to power the receiver and servos. This is a safer way to go on large models for the following reasons:
1. Most built-in BEC circuits are 1 to 3 amp 'linear' circuits which are only useful for 2 or 3 standard size servos when using a 3 cell Lipo battery. If you use more servos, or a higher voltage battery pack, you will almost certainly overload the BEC of the ESC, causing a crashed model.
2. In an ESC with a built-in BEC, excessive heat generated in the ESC by the motor current and/or BEC can cause total loss of power to the receiver/servos, resulting in a crashed model. The chance of total loss of power is greatly reduced when a separate receiver battery pack or UBEC is used. If the ESC overheats and shuts down (no power to the motor), you will still have power to the receiver/servos, and will be able to maintain control of the model.
3. In an OPTO ESC, the motor control circuitry is optically isolated from the line to the receiver, so the chance of glitches caused by motor noise is reduced.
The HURC 60 amp OPTO ESC has several programming options that can be set using your transmitter. No programming card is available.
Here is a summary of the programming options:
1. Battery type and motor cut-off voltage. Comes pre-set for a gradual motor shutdown at 60% of the battery starting voltage. If you are using Lipo batteries, we recommend changing this setting to a 3 volt per cell cut-off, or time your flights to end before the battery voltage drops to the low voltage cut-off.
2. Throttle settings: Comes pre-set to automatically adjust throttle range, and for a normal throttle curve.
3. Brake settings: Comes pre-set for a soft brake. Can also be set for medium, hard, or no brake.
4. Type of motor cut-off: Comes pre-set for gradual motor shutdown. Can also be set for sudden motor shut down.
5. Motor timing: Comes pre-set at 1 degree timing, which works with most brushless motors. Can also be set for 7, 15 or 30 degree timing.
6. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM): Comes pre-set at 8 khz, which works fine with most large brushless motors. Can also be set at 16 khz.
